Chris Stevenson is a member of the Business Services Group, practicing primarily in the areas of tax and employee benefits law. Chris is also a certified public accountant and, prior to attending law school, spent four years in public accounting. Chris regularly advises businesses on the tax aspects of mergers, acquisitions, and general business transactions. Chris also regularly represents individuals and businesses before the IRS, as well as state taxing authorities.

Chris has extensive experience advising businesses, nonprofits, Indian tribes and public employers on all aspects of qualified and nonqualified deferred compensation plans, health plans, and other employee benefit arrangements. Chris also regularly assists employers in drafting retirement plan and health plan documents, as well as counseling employers through the IRS and DOL’s retirement plan voluntary correction programs.

Chris is a member of the firm’s Indian law group and regularly advises tribes on all types of federal, state, and tribal tax matters, including the establishment of tax-qualified general welfare programs, compliance with the ACA, and implementation of tribal tax ordinances. Chris also advises tribes with respect to carrying out purchased referred care programs of IHS under the Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act.

Chris is a frequent speaker at the local and national level on various tax and employee benefit topics. Chris enjoys discussing complicated tax and employee benefits topics in plain language that is understandable and beneficial to non-tax lawyers.

While at the University of Maine School of Law, Chris was awarded the Honorable Daniel E. Wathen Legal Writing Prize (Best Petitioner’s Brief in Beard v. Banks) and was awarded the Kenneth Clegg Memorial Writing Award from the Maine State Bar Association and the York County Bar Association for his article, “Maine’s Dynasty Trust Statute: the Product of an Informed Judgment?”, which has been published in the Maine Bar Journal. At graduation, Chris received an Outstanding Scholastic Achievement Award for his work in the area of tax law.
